With the exception of two short periods of direct British intervention during the Anglo-Afghan Wars of 1839-42 and 1878-80, the history of nineteenth-century Afghanistan has received little attention from western scholars. This study seeks to shift the focus of debate from the geostrategic concern with Afghanistan as the bone of contention between imperial Russian and British interests to a thorough investigation of the sociopolitical circumstances prevailing within the country. On the basis of unpublished British documents and works by Afghan historians, it lays the groundwork for a better un

The Expeditions is one of theoldest biographies of the Prophet Muhammad to survive into the modern era. Itsprimary author, Ma'mar ibn Rashid (714-770 AD/96-153 AH), was a prominentscholar from Basra in southern Iraq who was revered for his learning inprophetic traditions, Islamic law, and the interpretation of the Qur'an. Thisfascinating foundational seminal work contains stories handed down by Ma'mar tohis most prominent pupil, 'Abd al-Razzaq of Sana'a, relating Muhammad’s earlylife and prophetic career as well as the adventures and tribulations of hisearliest followers during their conquest of the Near East.Editedfrom a sole surviving manuscript, the Arabic text offers numerous improvedreadings over those of previous editions, including detailed notes on thetext’s transmission and variants as found in later works. This new translation, which renders the original into readable, modern English for the first time, isaccompanied by numerous annotations elucidating the cultural, religious andhistorical contexts of the events and individuals described within its pages.TheExpeditions representsan important testimony to the earliest Muslims’ memory of the lives of Muhammadand his companions, and is an indispensable text for gaining insight into thehistorical biography of both the Prophet and the rise of the Islamic empire.

Shows how the study of modern Arabic literature was transformed by Mustafa Badawi. Prior to the 1960s the study of Arabic literature, both Classical and Modern, had barely been emancipated from the academic approaches of Orientalism. The appointment of Mustafa Badawi as Oxford University's first Lecturer in Modern Arabic Literature changed the face of this subject as Badawi showed, through his teaching and research that Arabic literature was making vibrant contributions to global culture and thought. Part biography, part collection of critical essays, this volume celebrates Badawi's immense contribution to the field and explores his role as a public intellectual in the Arab world and the west. Key Features: Illustrates the critical affiliations and teaching methods of the outstanding scholar of modern Arabic literature in the 20th century * Assesses some of the problems faced by an outstanding intellectual and translator in bridging Arabic and western cultures * Includes studies from eminent specialists who were taught by Badawi, showing the type of work he inspired, including Julia Bray, Hilary Kilpatrick, Marliyn Booth, Miriam Cooke and Paul Starkey

"This work offers a fresh assessment of the sources for the prophet Muhammad's life, integrating the earliest non-Muslim and documentary sources with the earliest prophetic biographies written in Arabic during the eighth-ninth centuries C.E. By placing these sources within the intellectual and cultural world of Late Antiquity, the author carves out a methodological approach to studying the historical Muhammad that, though reliant on the methods of critical historical scholarship, strikes a balance between revisionist historical skepticism and naïve historical realism"--

"With its increasing presence in a continuously evolving media environment, the essay film as a visual form raises new questions about the construction of the subject, its relationship to the world, and the aesthetic possibilities of cinema. In this volume, authors specializing in various national cinemas (American, Cuban, French, German, Israeli, Italian, Lebanese, Russian) and critical approaches (historical, aesthetic, postcolonial, feminist, philosophical) explore the essay film and its consequences for the theory of cinema while building on and challenging existing theories. Taking as a guiding principle the essay form's dialogic, fluid nature, this volume examines the potential of the essayistic to question, investigate, and reflect on all forms of cinema--fiction film, popular cinema, documentary, video installation, and digital essay. A wide range of filmmakers are covered, from Dziga Vertov (Man with a movie camera), Chris Marker (Description of a struggle), Nicoláa Guillén Landrián (Coffea arábiga), Pier Paolo Pasolini (Notes for an African Oresteia), Chantal Akerman (News from home), Mohammed Soueid (Civil war), Claire Denis (L'intrus), and Terrence Malick (The tree of life), among others. This volume argues that the essayistic in film--as process, as experience, as experiment--opens the road to key issues faced by the individual in relation to the collective, but can also lead to its own subversion, as a form of dialectical thought that gravitates towards crisis"--Back cover.
